Wild raspberry

Rubus idaeus — Excellent edible.

Never eat a wild mushroom or plant identified only from a website, book or app. Several deadly species look almost identical to edible ones, and mistakes can be fatal. Learn from an experienced forager in person, be certain of every specimen, and when in doubt, throw it out.

What it is

The wild raspberry is smaller and more aromatic than the cultivated kind and colonises sunny clearings and logged ground. The hollow, crumbly fruit that slips off its core is unmistakable and much loved by pickers of every age.

Where and when to find it

Clearings, forest edges and old cut-over ground. In season roughly July to September.

Look-alikes and safety

Raspberries and their bramble relatives are a safe group with no deadly European look-alike, though the thorny canes make for scratched arms.

Nutrition

About 52 kcal per 100 g, high in fibre. As with all wild food, the health value only matters once you are completely certain of a safe identification.
