Cloudberry

Rubus chamaemorus — Prized edible.

Never eat a wild mushroom or plant identified only from a website, book or app. Several deadly species look almost identical to edible ones, and mistakes can be fatal. Learn from an experienced forager in person, be certain of every specimen, and when in doubt, throw it out.

What it is

The amber cloudberry, ripening from red to soft gold, is the treasure of the northern bogs and one of the most valuable wild foods in Finland and northern Scandinavia. A good year is unpredictable, which only adds to its status.

Where and when to find it

Open bogs and mires of the far north. In season roughly July to early August.

Look-alikes and safety

The amber, raspberry-shaped berry on a single low stem in a bog is distinctive. The main hazard is the terrain: cloudberry bogs are wet and easy to get lost in.

Nutrition

About 51 kcal per 100 g, exceptionally high in vitamin C. As with all wild food, the health value only matters once you are completely certain of a safe identification.
